General update Money & Credit – January 2026 Trump is proposing a credit card cap in the US. Credit card interest rates have been rising in recent years. They averaged about 22% as of November 2025, up from 13% a decade ago, Federal Reserve data shows. 37% of adults carry a credit card balance, and overall credit card debt in the US totals more than $1 trillion. His ‘plan’ to cap credit card costs has already hit US bank shares. Trump wrote on Truth Social that interest rates on cards should be limited to 10% for one year from 20 January.
