General update Thanks to Colin Trend for spotting the headline that “UK consumer confidence falls to lowest level since 1974”. The headline UK consumer confidence index, a measure of how people view their personal finances and the wider economic outlook, dropped by 2% to -40 in May 2022, surpassing the previous record low of -39 set in July 2008 when the global banking system was imploding. Bank of England rate increase and inflation warning – review of SFS figures At its meeting ending on 4 May 2022, the MPC voted by a majority of 6-3 to increase Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage points, to 1%. Those members in the minority preferred to increase Bank Rate by 0.5 percentage points, to 1.25%.
