StepChange responds to Bank of England Money and Credit statistics
Net consumer credit borrowing rose to £1.2 billion in July 2024, from £0.9 billion in June. Within this, net borrowing through credit cards remained stable at £0.5 billion in July, while net borrowing through other forms of consumer credit (such as car dealership finance and personal loans) increased to £0.7 billion, from £0.4 billion in June.
Net borrowing of mortgage debt by individuals increased to £2.8 billion in July, the highest since November 2022 (£3.3 billion), and up from £2.6 billion in June.
