A lot seems to happen in the political world when you take a week off. The FCA response to the growth challenge may backfire at some point if contactless spend limits are made a matter of discretion. When they were introduced in the UK in 2007, the transaction limit was set at £10. Increases in the threshold since then included relatively big jumps around the time of the pandemic, to £45 in 2020, then to £100 in October 2021. They prompted surges in the average contactless spend.
Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the economy saw zero growth in the month f July 2025, which was in line with expectations, following a 0.4% expansion in June 2025.
